Description:
Rather distinctive treecreeper with well-defined dark bars on tail, and longest bill in genus. Dull plumage lacking strong rufous tones. From other treecreepers by combination of longer, more downcurved bill and dark cross-barring on tail. Supercilium and pale banding across wings are less distinct than on Hodgson's.
Distribution:
Common resident and altitudinal migrant in all the districts of Gilgit-Baltistan. Breeds in open coniferous forest and forest edge of juniper, pine and fir at 2200-3600m; also well-wooded areas and lower valleys down to 500m in winter.
Behavior:
Forages on tree trunks and boughs, sometimes among outer foliage, using fine bill to extract prey from cracks and crevices. Works upwards in hops, spiraling around trunk, and then flies to bottom of another tree and repeats process. Food insects, spiders and other small invertebrates; occasionally also seeds.
